When it comes to choosing the best Harvey softener model to buy - we recommend first asking yourself these questions:
-
How many bathrooms does your home have?
-
How many people live in your home?
-
Where is your stop tap located and how much space is available either: under the sink, in the garage or in the utility room.
If you live in an average family home with 1-4 bathrooms, the Harvey TwinTec Series 4 is a great choice of water softener. This model is designed for very hard water, it is a twin tank system which uses the latest technology to be one of the most salt and water efficient systems available in the UK. Is a Harvey Water Softener Worth the Cost?
As experts in the water softening industry, we know how beneficial a water softener can be and just how much damage it can prevent. When considering "Is a Harvey Water Softener worth the cost?" we recommend considering the following:
-
How long the system lasts and the warranty: warranty is a great indicator of product quality. The longer the guarantee from the manufacturer, the longer the product will last. But not all Harvey warranties are the same so it is worth double checking. The TwinTec S4 offers a warranty of 10 years for parts and 2 years for labour and can last 10-20 years.
-
How much is hard water costing you now? Hard water can show up as expensive cleaning products, dry hair and skin skin treatments, boiler repairs and breakdown charges, blocked pipe and tap repairs, washing machine, dishwasher and kettle breakdowns.
-
How much money can a water softener save? Reportedly anything from £400 - £1000 per year on household bills. Water softening not only makes your water silky and smooth, but it also means you can save money. You'll find you will need 50% less detergents and washing powders, 50% less showering products and less cleaning products. Not only that, but by protecting you appliances, boiler, pipes and taps - you'll save money on any hard water and limescale related issues. Soft water can also remove existing limescale. This means you may also find your hot water and heating becoming more efficient.
-
The other benefits: Soft water is great for your hair and skin. Many consumers buy a water softener for eczema, acne and other dry skin conditions. What's more, it works better than a simple shower filter - because it's a permanently solution that lasts up to 10 years. Not only that, but you'll find a great lather and bubbles when you have a bath or shower.
What is the Difference Between Single Cylinder and Twin Cylinder Water Softener Designs?
Many of our customers initially came to us for an upgrade from a single tank system and never looked back.
A single-cylinder water softener often has a smaller capacity - meaning a lower flow rate, and for that reason there could be a reduction in water pressure. That’s why we recommend always comparing the flow rate of any system you buy. Not only that but, single tank systems operate using just one resin tank to soften your water - meaning it needs to pause periodically for a regeneration cycle. During regeneration, the system temporarily stops providing softened water while it refreshes itself - meaning you’ll lose soft water during this time. Not only that, but single tank systems are often electric - driving up the running costs of your system.
In contrast, a twin-cylinder, twin-tank water softener uses two separate tanks. Meaning one tank is always running, while the other regenerates and you wont lose your supply of soft water.
This design is especially beneficial for homes with 3-4 bathrooms and families. By providing two tanks, these systems tend to have a higher flow rate and so are also less likely to negatively affect water pressure in the home.
Is a Harvey Water Softener Low-Maintenance or Self-Regenerating?
The Harvey TwinTec S4 is low maintenance and self regenerating. The system itself has an automated meter that measures the amount of water used - regenerating automatically only when it needs to. All Harvey models are non-electric, so also dont need to be plugged in or programmed.
What Maintenance is Required for a Water Softener?
In terms of low maintenance, the only thing that is really required is replacing the salt blocks, which you can do about once a month!
This is a straightforward process—just check the salt level occasionally and top up as needed to ensure your system keeps working efficiently.
You don’t need to have your water softener serviced, but it may be worth while every 3-5 years. But don’t forget - with a TwinTec system, you’ll have a 10 year warranty on parts, should anything go wrong.
If you notice your water isn’t feeling quite as soft or spot any unusual noises, you can always reach out for support or check our troubleshooting FAQs here.

Is Professional Installation Recommended for Water Softener Systems?
Yes, as experts we recommend professional installations - however, that doesn’t mean you need to go through a dealer, any qualified plumber can easily install the system. We recommend, like in our own installations, taking before and after photos of when the system is installed.
To install a softener, an experienced plumber will need to know:
-
Where your stop tap is located.
-
The pressure of your water - this is important as high pressures will require a pressure reducing valve to be installed.
-
Where to install the system - this is usually underneath the kitchen sink or in the utility room.
Professional installers can also check key details, like pipe compatibility and take care of any plumbing modifications needed - we usually have to install bypass valves and reshape and add new pipe work into your plumbing system.
How is a Harvey Water Softener Installed & How Long Does It Take?
A water softener installation is a 3-4 hour job and includes:
-
Shutting off the main water supply.
-
The installer cuts into the pipework at the appropriate spot after the stop tap and fits the water softener in-line, adding in bypass valves to the plumbing system.
-
Connecting a drain hose for the system’s regeneration cycle and water.

Is It Worth Installing a Water Softener in a Hard Water Area?
If you are living in a hard water area, you should be familiar with the effects of hard water in your home. Most of our customers come to us because of common issues such as skin conditions and damage to their fixtures and fittings.
Another common issue we find reported is broken appliances and boiler breakdowns from limescale damage. A water softener is worth installing in a hard water area because it can provide a whole host of benefits - including protecting and extending the life of home appliances such as kettles, dishwashers and washing machines, as well as protecting your boiler. It can also help to naturally soothe eczema, psoriasis and dry skin, whilst reducing stubborn limescale from your shower and kitchen.
